Travel and Transportation

AVP is proud to have a conference site which is exceptionally well-served by public transportation.  Hourly trains provide economical and energy-efficient service to the Nassau Blvd. Station, five blocks from the Adelphi campus. AmTrack, JFK and Newark airports all have easy connections to the Hempsted Line.   AVP will provide free shuttle service to and from the Nassau Blvd. station. 

By Train

From Penn Station in Manhattan, Flatbush Avenue Station in Brooklyn, or the Jamaica Station in Queens, take the Hempstead Line of the Long Island Railroad to Nassau Boulevard Station.

The Adelphi campus is a five block walk east on South Avenue.   AVP will provide free shuttle service from Nassau Blvd. Station to campus. 

Rides are available from the Nassau Blvd. station to Adelphi.   If an AVP or Adelphi car isn’t at the station when you arrive, call  “rides central” at 631-671-2790 and one will appear shortly.  You are also welcome to walk.

AmTrack to Adeplhi At Penn Station, New York, transfer to the Hempstead Line of the LIRR  for the train to Nassau Blvd.

By Air  

JFK is close to Adelphi and has frequent, inexpensive train service to campus, making it the airport of choice.   AirTrain picks up from all JFK terminals every few minutes for the short trip to Jamaica Station.    At Jamaica, transfer to Hempstead Line of the LIRR  to Nassau Blvd.  See “By Train” above for details.

Newark Airport has rail connections from terminals to Adelphi with two transfers along the way.  AirTrain picks up from all terminals every few minutes for the 10 minute trip to the EWR railroad station, where you will transfer to a NJ Transit train to Penn Station. At Penn Station transfer to Hempstead Line of the LIRR  to Nassau Blvd.  The web site http://www.panynj.gov/airtrainnewark/ provides detailed information on travel from Newark Airport to Penn Station.  See “By Train” above for details from Penn Station to Adelphi.

LaGuardia Airport is 18 miles from Adelphi but lacks train service.  Road travel is subject to traffic delays.  AVP will facilitate ride sharing from LaGuardia airport  to Adelphi campus.  Please indicate your desire for ground transportation your registration form, give permission to share your contact information with others and provide flight information when you have it.

By Car 

Remember to leave extra driving time for Memorial weekend traffic. Consider leaving the car at home and riding the train.

From North and East

Ferries to Long Island from New Haven or New London don’t save you time or money, but they provide a break in the driving.

If coming from New England, take 1-95 south; or if coming from New York. take I-87 to I-95 south. From I-95 take 295 to the Throgs Neck Bridge. Go over the Throgs Neck Bridge, bearing right, and exit onto the Cross Island Parkway - Eastern Long Island. Take the Cross Island Parkway to the Long Island Expressway (LIE) (Route 495) East. From there, Take the LIE. to Exit 34 South. Turn right onto New Hyde Park Road. Continue south on New Hyde Park Road for approximately 3 miles. Turn left onto Stewart Avenue. At the fourth light, turn right onto Nassau Boulevard. Continue approximately for a quarter of a mile. At the first light (as soon as you cross over the railroad tracks), make a left onto South Avenue to reach University Center, where activities will take place, To reach Eddy Hall, the dorm where we are staying,  continue three blocks south from the rail road tracks and turn right on Cambridge Ave.  Turn left into the first Adelphi entrance, then stay left as you wind your way to the parking lot behind Eddy Hall (see the map below).

 From West and South

Take I-95 north (New Jersey Turnpike) to Exit 13 (Goethals Bridge). After crossing the bridge, continue on the Staten Island Expressway to the Verrazano Bridge. Go over the bridge and get on the Belt Parkway (toward Kennedy Airport). Take the Belt Parkway to the Southern State Parkway. Take the Southern Parkway to Exit 17 North (Hempstead Avenue). Continue on Hempstead Avenue traveling north. Make a left at the second traffic light (Nassau Boulevard). Continue north for approximately two miles. To reach Eddy Hall, the dorm where we are staying,  continue three blocks south from the rail road tracks and turn right on Cambridge Ave.  Turn left into the first Adelphi entrance, then stay left as you wind your way to the parking lot behind Eddy Hall .  To reach University Center, where activities will take place, continue on Nassau Boulevard and then turn right on South Ave justbefore the railroiad tracks.  The entrance to campus will be on your right.

 Two AM radio stations, 880 and 1010 give regular information on traffic around NYC.   Tune in as soon as you can, in case you want to adjust your driving route in response to the information they provide.
